delhi-cm-announcement-process-what-to-expect-for-election-selection

As anticipation mounts over the selection of Delhi’s new chief minister, all eyes are on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for an announcement. Speculations are swirling that any significant political developments in Delhi may unfold after the conclusion of Parliament’s Budget session and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s return from his overseas trip.

Manjinder Singh Sirsa, the BJP’s victorious candidate from the Rajouri Garden assembly seat, emphasized that the party’s high command will determine Delhi’s chief minister. Describing Delhi as a pivotal city, he emphasized that the individual who aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s vision will assume the role of CM. But what exactly is the process for electing a chief minister in Delhi?

### The Selection Process Unveiled

The BJP is expected to embark on a series of steps following its triumph in the Delhi Election 2025 to nominate the new CM. The process typically unfolds as follows:

#### Step 1: Appointment of Observers
Initially, the BJP will designate observers, typically announced through a press release. These observers are typically part of the central team.

#### Step 2: Meeting with MLAs
The appointed observers will then convene with the Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs).

#### Step 3: Vidhan Mandal Meeting or Legislative Party Meeting
Subsequently, a crucial meeting known as the Vidhan Mandal Meeting or Legislative Party Meeting will be held where the observers and MLAs will collaborate to designate a leader.

#### Step 4: The Big Reveal
Finally, the name of Delhi’s new Chief Minister will be unveiled. The entire process is expected to span at least a week.

Rumors are circulating in political circles that the legislature party might convene after Prime Minister Modi’s return from his diplomatic visit to France and the United States. The Prime Minister is scheduled to visit the US on February 12-13 at the invitation of President Donald Trump, coinciding with the conclusion of Parliament’s Budget session on February 13.

### Who Will Lead Delhi?

After a hiatus of more than 26 years, the BJP secured victory in the elections for the 70-member assembly, claiming 48 seats and relegating the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to a distant second with 22 seats. Speculations abound regarding the potential candidates for the CM position, with BJP leader Vijender Gupta asserting that any of the 48 newly-elected MLAs could assume the role.

A BJP spokesperson revealed to news agency PTI that the party may consider an MLA with a ‘Purvanchal’ background, a Sikh, or a woman, depending on the strategic calculations guiding the party’s leadership. Drawing from past experiences in states like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Odisha, where the BJP selected relatively unknown figures for the chief minister’s post, the party’s decision-making process remains closely watched.

In previous instances, the BJP has opted for fresh faces with a low public profile, such as Mohan Yadav in Madhya Pradesh, Bhajanlal Sharma in Rajasthan, Vishnu Deo Sai in Chhattisgarh, Pushkar Singh Dhami in Uttarakhand, and Mohan Charan Majhi in Odisha.
