Senior Congress leader Lalji Desai made explosive allegations on Tuesday, claiming that the ruling BJP in Tripura misused a staggering ₹21,000 crore of public funds as commissions for government projects during their seven-year tenure. This accusation was vehemently denied by the BJP, who refuted any wrongdoing and emphasized their commitment to transparency in all projects. Desai, the head of Congress’ service wing Sevadal, alleged that no government work in Tripura could proceed without paying 10% of the project cost to ruling party leaders as commissions.
Allegations of Corruption in Tripura
During a party rally, Desai boldly stated, “The ruling party leaders collect 10% of the project cost in the state as a commission. If you take into account the BJP’s seven-year regime, its leaders have siphoned at least ₹21,000 crore which was meant for the public.” While no specific examples of corruption were provided by Desai, the gravity of his allegations sparked immediate controversy and debate.
The BJP, which came to power in Tripura in March 2018, replacing the long-standing CPI(M) government, strongly refuted the claims made by Desai. Tripura BJP spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharjee dismissed the accusations, labeling them as misinformation and highlighting the historical misgovernance during the Congress-TUJS rule from 1988 to 1993. Emphasizing that transparency is a cornerstone of their governance, the BJP maintained their stance against any malpractice.
Political Turbulence and Allegations
Desai further criticized the BJP, accusing them of using financial resources to sway elections and questioning the priorities of the government. Referencing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to a wildlife conservation center in Gujarat, Desai remarked, “Our Prime Minister has time to click photos with lions and tigers in a private zoo, but he cannot find time to visit Manipur which has been boiling for two years.” This pointed critique underscored the tensions and challenges faced by various regions in India.
In a scathing rebuke of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Desai accused the organization of undermining Constitutional values by their actions. He highlighted their alleged failure to hoist national flags, sing the national anthem at events, and their lack of diversity in leadership. Drawing a parallel with historical sacrifices made by Congress leaders for the nation, Desai called upon party members to uphold the country’s integrity and unity.
The allegations and counterclaims between the Congress and BJP in Tripura shed light on the complex interplay of politics, power, and governance in the region. As the accusations reverberate through the political landscape, the need for transparency, accountability, and ethical leadership remains paramount in upholding the public trust and democratic principles.
