New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is all set to lead the Indian delegation to the annual meeting of the board of governors of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Milan, Italy, from 4 May to 7 May, according to a statement from the ministry on Sunday.
During her time in Milan, Sitharaman will be having some one-on-one chats with her counterparts from Italy, Japan, and Bhutan. She’ll also be rubbing elbows with some big shots from key international organizations.
Not stopping there, Sitharaman, who also wears the hat of the Minister of Corporate Affairs, is scheduled to have sit-downs with global think tanks, business honchos, and CEOs while she’s in Milan.
On top of all that, the finance minister will be connecting with the Indian community abroad and giving a keynote speech at a plenary session during the NEXT Milan Forum at Bocconi University. The theme? “Balancing Economic and Climate Resilience.” Sounds pretty heavy, right?
The ADB’s annual meeting of the board of governors, this one being the 58th edition, is a big deal. It’s like the Super Bowl of finance ministers, central bank governors, government bigwigs, business moguls, international development partners, and academics from ADB’s member countries all coming together to chat.
This shindig is a chance for all these important folks to discuss the big economic challenges facing the region and the globe, as well as lay out strategies for promoting sustainable and inclusive growth across Asia and the Pacific. They’ll be diving deep into seminars, policy dialogues, and networking events that will shape the ADB’s game plan for the year ahead.
Not really sure why this matters, but states’ liabilities under Centre’s 50-year interest-free loan scheme are set to exceed ₹3.5 trillion by the end of FY25. Just throwing that out there.
So, all in all, Sitharaman’s trip to Milan is going to be a whirlwind of meetings, speeches, and networking opportunities. And who knows, maybe she’ll even have a chance to enjoy some gelato while she’s in Italy. Wouldn’t that be nice?
